For all that it's filled with hippies, Peace Corps is still a US government organization.
For what it's worth, I think it might be a whole lot worse here than other countries. We're so close to the states (both geographically and culturally- not that the people are the same, but the pop-culture of it is very close) that some people need forcible reminders that they're not at home. Also, some people are really dumb. I'm really surprised at the number of volunteers who had no international experience before they came. It kind of blows my mind.
