I never cease to be amazed at how quickly things come together when you let them. Back in January, I got an email from a friend. We traveled together in Spain a few years ago, and we’ve been tossing around the idea of "The Trip: Take Two" ever since. Suddenly, tickets were reasonable, she had a reading week, I skipped out on my tests, and she was here.

Somehow it didn’t get any easier to believe as the week wore on. We kept turning to each and exclaiming in sheer awesome "You're here! And we're at the Grand Canyon!" We did all the things one does in the southwest, the Canyon, Monument Valley, Santa Fe, green chili, the Frontier, and the quest for a velvet Elvis painting. But it wasn't the important part. The important part was harnessing the power of the great American road trip as a bonding experience. Or as a brilliant excuse to listen to Sly and the Family Stone for hours and hours on end.

And O the fun things I’ve learned about Canada. Evidently they have movies about curling! And no counties! Wacky. I can now name all the territories and provinces, and identify thirteen different funk bands in five opening notes.

All in all, it was awesome, except for the tamales (WTF Alibi, WTF?), and the last ten minutes sitting in the Frontier at four thirty waiting for her cab. There’s something about saying goodbye: as if it gets easier the more pratice you get! No.
