Feb. 7th, 2006 06:13 pmA few days ago, I woke up with the most brilliant idea in the world: Internal computer tagging.
Do any of you out there not know about del.icio.us? Because it's a beautiful website, and oh, the ability to tag things rather than putting them in folders! So good! So, brilliantly awesome. But I am greedy, and I love how del.icio.us works so much, that it's physically painful to have to organize things into folders on my computer.
I mean, think about it. If there were some program that allowed you to affix searchable tags to any kind of data- I would be able to tag my music with important notes like where I found the artist, or how I would classify the mood, or (and this is a big one) when I found the particular mp3. I would be able to organize my .pdf library, so that I'd know when, and for what, I downloaded the file, in addition to the subject and authors. (Like an annotated bibliography! Right on my harddrive!) I could classify images I've saved as photo reference, or interesting in their own right, or both! I could find illustrations of girls with cats, or photographs of girls with cats; all from a central location, without browsing though my entire harddrive of stupid! And really, oh, really, I want a meaningful way to organize vids- by source material, vidder, artist, genre: and I want to be able to do it all at once.
But! I can not be the only person who feels this way. I take comfort in the fact that someone who understands programing better than I do is probably already at work on this. At least I hope they are, because I have seen the future with my own two eyes, and I can't wait for it to get here.
