I am sculpting!

Alright, it's in wax, and seriously, when they said "small scale" it was, in no way a joke. Like, smaller-than-your-fist scale. But! None of that really matters, because I am having fun with this.

This is what I miss, in the interim when I am not taking art class. There is this sense of forced creativity, which, when I put it that way, doesn't sound so good. But! There's this time you have to carve out for yourself, to do arty things, and that just leads to more thinking about other arty things, and I am stoked for both my knitting projects at the moment, and this waxy thing I'm sculpting, and this stupidly moronic book I am making out of maps. (Note: just in case you were thinking about it: old maps are really a terrible media to be making books out of. They crumble. Do not be tempted, no matter how awesome they look.)

The point being, I'm having so much fun with this, that my ridiculous amounts of reading are actually proving not to be mindnumbing and painful. (It may help that the bee wolf wasp uses landmarks to find its nest, and that the only family of parasites that don't feed on humans is plants. These are facts I was grouchy about earlier in the week, but dude! I sometimes forget that school can be fun.)

This post was in no way brought to you by the fact that I am not doing my research. Not even a little bit, not even at all. I'm going to blame the stupid gel machine, but I think laziness might have more to do with it.

Edit: oh my GOD. Who thought it was a good idea to give me an alcohol lamp? No, really, I'm asking. Because I have singed off my HAIR, and oh the SMELL, and isn't this something they should check before they give you art supplies? Shouldn't they make sure you have the native wit to actually use them?

When I was in school a girl knocked her lamp over and managed to start a fire on her whole worktable that went into the liter bottle of denatured alcohol. Jeez. Some people just shouldn't be given fire. We had a rule that you weren't supposed to scream when shit like that happens because then everyone else panics and knocks there lamps over and catches their hair on fire.
Try scanning your maps next time and printing with a nice color printer.

All our work sections are compartmentalized- like, you have enough room for your work and your elbows, and then there is a little concrete wall. It feels kind of like study hall, and kind of like prison. For all that, I am unaccountably fond of the place.

I really loved the texture of the maps- I was hoping I could laminate them, after, but you're totally right. Next time I do this, I will totally do it with printed copies.
