I promised myself I’d go to bed early, but instead, I’m staring at the ceiling. There is nothing fascinating about my ceiling, and solid hour of contemplation has failed to bring out any subtly interesting features that I had hitherto overlooked. (I think “hitherto” is one of the most underused words in the English language. I am on a campaign to revive it, but so far, people just give me funny looks. This is not a whole lot different than usual, actually.) I wonder if I would get fined for room vandalism if I painted it blue. Because at least then, it would be a holey, boring, tile ceiling that was blue.

On a slightly larger scale. I am contemplating a large act of temporary public vandalism. Mostly, this comes from the fact that my school has so few interesting traditions, (the current number would be one) and we should up the anti. Seriously, one tradition does not school sprit make. On the other hand, the tradition we do have is a lovely one. In New Mexico (and as far as I can tell, no where else at all), some time around Christmas we light luminarias. (Picture & Article) It’s a simple thing, this “Hanging of the Greens,” consisting of ten thousand paper bags filled with sand and candles, but on that night, campus is amazing. They shut off the blinding safety lighting, and all the walkways, byways, plazas, steps and benches are illuminated by candle glow. The centerpiece this year was a howling wolf in front of Zimmerman, which by all rights ought to be kitchy and overdone, but was instead beautiful.

Bibish and I saw The Last Samurai today, which despite our massively snarky commentary, I quite enjoyed. This means I have enjoyed, on some level, the last five movies I've seen. Obviously, someone has stolen my brain and replaced it with the brain of a person who actually likes watching movies.

You would be astonished at how difficult it is to get people to dress up and run around here. It's like they have some sense of shame!

I am thinking it will be much easier when you get here.
