Jan. 27th, 2007 12:21 pmSo I was at this meeting, the other day. (And let me just make, as an aside comment here, a note about how much Jamaicans love meetings. It's a very large number. They love the formalities of it, with the chairs recognising good member such and so to speak, and the reading of very thorough minutes, and discussions of the objectives of the meetings, before the discussion can begin, etc. etc.) We're going around the room, and the chair is asking if anyone has had any birthdays or anniversaries or celebrations they'd like to share- and of course we have there are a few, so we sing the anniversary celebration song (Oh, don't be ridiculous, of course there is an anniversary celebration song) and then we sing happy birthday.
Now, I may have grown up singing happy birthday in Spanish, but I was pretty sure I knew the words. Here, however, this is a two verse song, the second verse being: "May the good lord bless you, may the good lord bless you, happy birthday dear colleague, may the dear lord bless you."
Then we sang devotion. (This meeting's selection was "With Jesus Beside Me (all things are possible)")
Ah, Jamaica. Here, we don't worry about separation of church and state.
